Optical Sorting Machine for Vegetables and Diced Fruit with Air Jet Rejection

When processing vegetables and diced fruit, removing defects such as discoloration, rot, and foreign material is critical to ensure consistent product quality. Optical sorting systems use high-speed vision technology and air rejection to automatically separate defective product at industrial scale.

Detect and remove defects using high-speed cameras and air jets

The DixAir optical sorter from Protec is designed for high-capacity sorting of vegetables, diced tomatoes, and fruit, using advanced vision systems combined with air jet rejection.

Product is transported on a conveyor belt, where it is inspected by high-resolution linear cameras supported by dedicated lighting systems, including backlighting for enhanced defect visibility. The system detects defects such as off-color, rot, and discoloration, with detection sensitivity down to approximately 0.5 × 0.25 mm.

Image data is processed in real time using high-speed processors (DSP, FPGA) and proprietary software. When a defect is identified, the system activates air nozzles (solenoid-controlled) to remove the defective product from the stream without interrupting flow.

The sorter is available in multiple sizes with capacities up to 90 tons per hour, depending on the model and product, and belt widths up to 1500 mm. Conveyor speed can be adjusted up to 4 m/s, allowing adaptation to different product types and throughput requirements.

The machine includes a touchscreen HMI with integrated monitoring software, enabling operators to adjust parameters, monitor performance, and control sorting accuracy. Connectivity via Ethernet (TCP/IP) allows integration into plant control systems, with optional remote diagnostics and support.
